Pere Gifre (Figueres, Spain, 1974) is a San Francisco based artist, specialized in sculpture projects, sceneographies, interior & industrial design and architecture. His vast knowledge of these different fields allows him to enrich his designs through the implementation of different specialized techniques and processes such as the VFX Engineering, a self-created design that uses computer systems which allow him to transform physical processes of nature into a sculpture.

Gifre’s works are characterized by the constant search for new design processes and methods of investigation. One example of this would be one of his latest projects: a unique and innovative tableware collection for the world’s top restaurant, El Bulli. The collection is based on the re-creation of processes we find in nature.

His projects include: Musical Gaudí for the Barcelona Teatre Musical, the New York Aquarium Fish Scales Sculptures, Prestige Forest for the MoMa Spanish Architecture Exhibition, the opera Viatge a Simorgh for Madrid’s Royal Theater, and the 68 foot Splash sculpture for Expo Zaragoza 2008, in which he re-created the form given by a drop of water as it hits a surface. Other recent works also include the El Bulli Tableware Collection for the top chef Ferran Adrià, his new collection of sculptures: Water Feelings, and the design of the America´s Cup World Series Trophy.

He, currently, has projects going on with the Hyatt Hotel, the Marriott, the Fairmont and the Club Quarters, PGA Catalunya Resort. In addition, he´s been selected as one of the five finalists to undertake a large-scale sculpture for the new Transition Hall at Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport.

Gifre’s work, both independently and in collaboration with other artists, has been published nationally and internationally in publications such as Wired magazine, AL Innovation, MoMa magazine , The New York Times , The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph , Domus, Creative Review, BBC News , Vision Innovation magazine, Plastyki Artbook, Artfutura magazine and Bonart. All of these publications have highlighted the artist’s talent for innovation in his projects.

Pere also participates in exhibitions, conferences and festivals. In 2008, at Artfutura, he presented his new projects, which were based on the imitation of natural physical processes. In 2009 his projects were presented at INDABA Design in South Africa, Tokyo TASTE, the University of Barcelona and at MIPCOM in Cannes, in collaboration with Ferran Adrià. In 2010 the Splash project was presented at the SIGRAPH Festival in Los Angeles.

One of his latest works, Impact, can be seen in the collective exhibition Temps Fugit at Moja Palace, alongside other artists such as Salvador Dalí, Antoni Tàpies, Manolo Millares, Josep Guinovart, Nobuko Kihira, Jaume Plensa and Albert Ràfols Casamada, among others. Pieces of Gifre´s collection are also exhibited in galleries in Europe and USA. In July 28th, Pere will exhibit a selection of his works at the Concourse Building (555 California) in San Francisco.

All other Gifre’s projects, whether it be real or imaginary, static or dynamic, a jewel or a large-scale project, are unique and unrepeatable, designed and created, specially, for each individual occasion.

Design: America´s Cup World Series Trophy

Medium: Silver Plated Brass-
Dimensions: 28 inches tall.

Date created: May 2012

Description: I was selected under the America´s Cup Authority supervision to design and develop the trophy for the America´s Cup World Series.

After more than 30 different designs presented, a concept with iconic and simpler shapes was chosen: The nine wing sails supporting the globe stand for the nine teams competing in the 2011-12 AC World Series. The globe reflects the international nature of the competition teams and venues, while the overall design is a tribute to the precision of technology that is such an important aspect of the sport.

The trophy was presented in Venice (Italy) on May 15th.  Next July 1st, in Newport, Rhode Island, USA, the trophy will be given to the World Series Winner.

I´d like to highlight that this trophy will be permanent for the America´s Cup World Series from this year onwards.
