The California-Spain Chamber of Commerce invites you to discover some world-class scientific projects in the space environment.
Rafael Guzman, Spanish entrepreneur and Chairman of the Department of Astrophysics at University of Florida, will talk about his new company, world leader in the space exploration industry with groundbreaking application in oil industry, smart city protocol and multi wave imaging of the Earth. He will also explain the cooperation between leading universities in Spain and Florida, together with NASA and Telefonica.

ABSTRACT:
Rafael will present the plans of the recently formed company that aims to define and lead the incipient micro/nanosat industry by setting the standardization and modularity of this technology at a low-cost for large-scale production. Market analysis estimates 100 – 300 micro/nanosats per year will be launched in the second half if this decade.
Their initial focus will be on three main broad areas of commercial applications: (i) oil industry (reference mission: surveillance of PEMEX oil pipelines every 15 – 30 min); (ii) the Smart City Protocol (reference mission with a typical revisit.time of 2 – 3 hrs under study); and (iii) multi-wavelength imaging of the whole Earth with 3 m resolution every 24 hrs.
He will also present the Institute of Technology for Microsatellite Science, a collaborative effort between University of Florida (UF) and the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), that leads some world-class scientific projects in the space environment and provides joint education and training on micro satellites. It also provides a summer camp with the NASA Florida Space Grant Consortium and the Telefonica Talentum School involves designing, building, and flying scientific and engineering payloads including launching at sub-orbital altitudes using a weather balloon or a sounding rocket from the Kennedy Space Center.
SPEAKER’S BIO:
His main area of research is galaxy evolution over cosmological timescales. In particular, Rafael studies the structure, kinematics and stellar populations of galaxies both in the nearby universe and in the distant universe. The comparative analysis of these galaxy properties at different epochs allows us to describe how galaxies have evolved in the last 12 billion years. He graduated in Physics and Astronomy in 1989 at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain). He obtained my PhD at the University of Durham (England) in 1994.
