Understanding 401(k)’s for Spanish Workers in the U.S.
Cross border professionals in the U.S. tend to have complicated affairs, and quite often they have nowhere to go for answers. 401(k)’s are a valuable benefit, and generally make up an important element of a global retirement plan, yet understanding what happens to it once you move abroad is a challenge. In this presentation, we’ll answer some of the key question about 401(k)s for Spanish employees and provide a forum for questions and answers. Key questions to be addressed include:
- When I leave the U.S., should I withdraw my 401(k) balance or leave it where it is?
- If I leave it behind then give up my residency, do I have to file a U.S. tax return?
- How will it be taxed when I eventually start taking money out?
- Should I be investing differently than my coworkers?
- How does the 401(k) fit in with my foreign pensions?
